What is IT support for construction companies?

Most IT providers build their service around a simple picture: everyone sits at a desk, in one building, on one network, with one internet connection. That describes an accountancy practice. Why can't a construction company just use a normal IT provider?

How do you get reliable internet and Wi-Fi on a construction site?
This is the single most common question we get from builders, and the honest answer is that you plan it before the site opens, not after the first week of complaints.
For most sites in Kent, a managed 4G or 5G router is the practical answer. It can be live the day the cabin lands, it moves to the next job when this one finishes, and with a dual-SIM setup on two different networks it keeps working when one network has a bad day. Where a site runs long enough and the plot allows it, a fixed line becomes worth the lead time, but for anything under roughly six months the mobile route usually wins on both cost and sanity.
Two things matter more than the hardware. First, coverage needs checking on the actual plot rather than assumed from a coverage map, because a signal that works at the gate can vanish behind a steel frame. Second, the site network needs the same security posture as the office. A site cabin router with the default password on it, sitting on the same flat network as your project files, is not a convenience. It is an open door with a kettle next to it.
Why is the construction industry such a big target for invoice fraud?
Because construction has the exact combination criminals look for: complex supply chains, frequent high-value payments, and payment instructions that get communicated by email.
The numbers are not abstract. According to the National Crime Agency, Report Fraud figures show that in September 2025 alone, invoice fraud victims lost £3,908,086 across 83 reported cases, averaging more than £47,000 per case. Invoice fraud accounted for 85% of all payment diversion fraud losses that month. In 2024/25, Report Fraud analysis indicated the two largest sectors affected were construction and manufacturing, together making up a quarter of cases.
That is why the NCA and the National Federation of Builders launched a joint campaign aimed at finance staff in construction in March 2026.
The attack is simple and it does not require anyone to be careless. A criminal compromises or spoofs an email account somewhere in the chain, waits until a genuine large invoice is in flight, and sends a polite note saying the bank details have changed. The invoice is real. The amount is right. The project is right. Only the account number is wrong, and by the time anyone notices, the money has been moved through several accounts.
The NCA's own guidance is worth pinning above the desk of whoever pays your invoices:
- CHECK for any changes to invoice details, bank details, or pressure for an urgent payment.
- VERIFY by calling the supplier on a number you already had, never the one on the invoice, before you transfer anything.
- NEVER transfer money until you are satisfied the details are correct.
Technology should back that process up rather than replace it. One practical control costs nothing: a written rule that no bank detail change is ever actioned on the strength of an email, full stop, no matter who appears to have sent it.
Do construction companies need Cyber Essentials to win contracts?
Increasingly, yes, and this is where IT stops being an overhead and starts being a commercial requirement.
Cyber Essentials is the UK government-backed certification covering five basic technical controls. Since 2014 it has been a baseline requirement for central government contracts that involve handling sensitive or personal information, and the requirements were updated under Procurement Policy Note 014. Cyber Essentials Plus, the audited version, is increasingly expected on higher value contracts.
For a Kent construction firm, the practical effect is straightforward. If you want to bid for public sector work, local authority frameworks, education or healthcare projects, or sit in the supply chain of a main contractor who does, you will be asked for it. Tier one contractors push their own requirements down the chain, so plenty of subcontractors discover this at the worst possible moment, three days before a tender deadline.
Certification is not a one-off.
